Toshiba: Space Chair
Project overview by The Mill:
The Mill has once again teamed up with Grey London and Hungryman to complete the latest Toshiba commercial “Space Chair”. The world”s highest commercial at 98,000 feet above the earth!
The spot was made by strapping two video cameras and chair to a high altitude helium balloon and allowing them to float into space.
The full sized chair was made up of super-light balsawood and was sent in to orbit from the Nevada Black Rock desert to reach 98,000 ft above earth, capturing the incredibly journey with Toshiba’s high-definition IK-HR1S video cameras. To reach the altitude required and to conform to America’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, the entire rig had to weigh no more than 4lb.
Adam Grint, Flame op, The Mill said: “This was an incredibly exciting and inspirational project to work on. The footage was breathtaking considering the extremes of the shooting conditions”.
Chris Batten, Producer, The Mill comments: “It was very exciting to work on another creative Toshiba project after the huge success of Timesculpture. When we first heard the idea for “Space Chair” we immediately knew we were going to be part of something very special.” He added: “During our first edit everyone was completely floored by the footage”.
The amazing journey concludes with the chair braking up at the peak height of 98,268 ft due to the extreme atmospheric pressure. Along the way the temperature dropped to -90C as the chair reached 60,000ft (at 62,000ft human fluids boil due to very low atmospheric pressure) and the rig survived for 70 minutes before disintegrating. Finally, once the rig was destroyed by atmospheric conditions, it took 40 minutes for the remains to crash back to Earth.
