LOST: 6th Season Promo – Making of
Project overview by Boolab:
On Sunday, 29 November 2009, the final episode of the fifth season of Lost aired on Spanish TV Channel Cuatro, followed directly by a promo for season six, due to start at the beginning of February. Cuatro’s creative team commissioned boolab with the production of the 40″ piece, which was directed by Frankie de Leonardis. Using the Radiohead song “Everything In Its Right Place” and the words of Persian poet Omar Khayyam, the promo provides a metaphor for the fate of the protagonists of the legendary series, comparing them to the pieces of an imaginary chess game touched by destiny. Each element in the piece (the three-dimensional chess board, the palm trees in the background, the statue, the hand, etc.) was developed separately, using multiple visual effects, in order to achieve the desired dramatic effect while rigorously respecting the island’s philosophy and codes. Within a few hours, the piece was being hailed as “the best Lost promo I’ve ever seen” by the show’s co-executive producer, Carlton Cuse, on his Twitter page. From then on it spread like wildfire across the Internet, with over 750,000 hits on YouTube and mentions on a multitude of blogs and forums and in digital media such as The Los Angeles Times, New York Entertainment, Slashfilm, Entertainment Weekly and The New York Post.
