Adidas Originals: Star Wars Cantina

It’s here… the hotly anticipated third instalment of Adidas Originals’ Star Wars campaign! Reuniting once again with the team from agency Sid Lee and director Nima Nourizadeh, we have helped put the finishing touches to the hilarious length spot that sees Becks hanging out in bar with Hans Solo and Obi Wan Kinobe.

The full 2 minute spot is a modern mash-up of the famous cantina scene in Star Wars featuring several well-known Adidas faces alongside the likes of C3PO and R2D2. Yet again, director Nima has masterfully extracted stand-out performances – in particular from Snoop Dogg and David Beckham whose spot on comic timing hits the mark perfectly. The ad also features cameos from Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Daft Punk and Franz Beckenbauer.

Our challenge was to integrate the new characters into the existing Star Wars footage. After careful pre-shoot planning, replicas of the original set were built taking particular care to ensure the dimensions of the bar were exact so that the performers could realistically interact with the set.

We took these new plates and the Star Wars footage, removed the original characters and composited the new characters seamlessly into the original footage. Then we added TV screens featuring footage of a football match and football memorabilia to the scene to bring it up to date. Finally, the film was graded by our colourist Adam Scott to ensure that both the original cinematic footage and newly shot HD footage matched and the overall effect, flawless.
